Micro-library with strong e-reader focus

The Blackwood and Kirkmuirhill Library is an exemplification of future trends in libraries, so much so that it featured as a case study at the 2013 Edge Conference in Edinburgh.
This micro-library is proof that through clever use of space and bespoke furniture, a compact space can still have maximum impact.

The main objective was to create a space conducive to digital reading and learning, with a limited book collection but strong e-reader focus. As such our design concentrated on providing ways to embrace new technology, incorporating PC workstations and, our pride and joy, ‘The Gadget Bar’ a desk configured to be used by drop-in library users or as part of tutorial classes.

A mini Genius Bar was mimicked in the children’s section with a smaller, low-level interpretation.
Clear signage and poetic graphics provide a lyrical backdrop, resulting in a technologically dynamic yet welcoming library for the community to embrace and enjoy.
