Baroque monastery becomes new library
There are few library buildings with such a rich history as Het Predikheren in Mechelen. Originally founded in the 17th century by the preachers as a monastery with a chapel, it was later transformed into a military hospital and barracks.
An architectural competition was launched for its renovation and repurposing, which was won by the Korteknie Stuhlmacher Architects office. The Predikheren has now been transformed into a space full of culture, with room for meetings, visits and study. Everything is shrouded and framed with a rich history that is visually present.
The children's and youth library is located in the attic. A unique space where the original oak beams are still part of the roof construction. The warmth of the wood embraces you and continues in the furniture. An ideal place for young people to browse through the books.
The books are arranged frontally in low broswers and the collection follows the contours of the building. The furnishing of the library is a combination of custom work and standard furniture, always opting for a sustainable finish. Thus Het Predikheren is ready for a new chapter in its history.
