Edda Research Center, Reykjavík, Iceland
Edda is a new landmark building in Reykjavík and home to the diverse work of the Árni Magnússon Institute for Icelandic Studies as well as the Faculty of Icelandic and Comparative Cultural Studies at the University of Iceland. The building’s design is meant to provide an adaptable setting for a vibrant scientific community, a space for both stimulating communication among students, instructors and scholars as well as quiet academic study.
Since 2008 when the architectural design competition was launched for the creation of the new Edda building, formally known as “House of Icelandic Studies”, light has always played a leading role in the space.
Placing emphasis on the combination of natural light offered by the building fabric, and artificial light integrated into the shelving was a key driver in choosing the right product for the main hall and surrounding areas.
It was essential the shelving blended with the quality of materials used in the construction. Colours, materials and build quality needed to be coupled with the ability to add custom acoustic finishes to the shelving, making Lingo shelving the perfect choice.
We worked with our partners Þjónustumiðstöð bókasafna in Reykjavik to supply the best solution for the customer and building, resulting in using a combination of static and mobile, straight, and curved Lingo shelving with lighting and acoustic treatments.
Both visitors and staff agree the building and the interior offer a naturally spacious atmosphere and welcome the flexibility of mobile shelving which provides flexibility in the main hall for extracurricular events.
