New library design in temporary premises

After a case of arson in Larvik Library in 2019, large parts of the building were completely damaged, so the library was forced to close. Now the library has been given a temporary location in a former shopping center until the new, permanent premises are ready.

The design of the library has taken into account that 1700 shelf meters must be organized in an efficient and user-friendly way within an area of 2,000 m2 with many glass walls. Flexibility is extra important in the temporary library as the furniture must also be used in the new, permanent premises. Therefore, almost all the furniture is on castors or easy to move around.

The library has succeeded in combining more compact areas in some parts with more open spaces in other parts of the library, with the open space making it possible to hold larger events and gatherings. There is a room designated especially for school classes and other organized activities for children and young people during the day. For students, there is a separate department with both a small reading room and two group rooms.

Both the choice of color and the naming of the different rooms are influenced by local affiliation and identity. The beech forest and the sea has given inspiration to the library and books and quotes by the local, well-known author, Ingvar Ambjørnsen, have been given a prominent location in the library.
