Kiruna Public Library, Sweden
In Sweden's northernmost town, Kiruna, lies one of the world’s largest underground mines, where iron is extracted. The town was founded in 1900 by miners, and after many years of mining, the foundation beneath the town is set to disappear in the near future. Therefore, parts of the town are currently being relocated 3 kilometers away to secure the future of both the mine and the town.
The library has also received a new location, and in connection with its move to a new cultural centre, the interior of the library has been redesigned, primarily using existing furniture.
Carina Bergsten, the library director in Kiruna, explains, "Over the years, we've been highly content with the furnishings obtained during the 2012 relocation. When the need arose to relocate once more to Kiruna's new center, our strategy was to retain as much of the existing furnishings as possible. This decision stemmed not only from sustainability, economic, and environmental considerations but also because the furnishings remained in excellent condition. We then complemented them with additional furniture, considering the layout of the new premises. Nonetheless, as mentioned, retaining the majority of the furnishings has been deeply satisfying."
